Function and technical context

This zinc sacrificial anode is part of the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as a galvanic element that corrodes in a controlled manner to protect the metal parts of the engine - casing, propeller, tail tube and aluminum components - against electrolytic corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or contaminated water. When installed in strategic areas of the powertrain, it attracts the oxidation process towards itself, preserving the structural integrity of the most expensive and critical components of the engine. Its progressive deterioration is precisely the sign that it is working correctly; When it is completely exhausted, corrosion begins to attack the noble parts of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has reached its useful life is the loss of more than 50% of its mass due to wear - it can be seen visually as a significant reduction in its volume or a highly eroded and irregular surface; at that point it should be replaced immediately, as a depleted anode leaves the motor without cathodic protection. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at each beaching and replace them at least once a season, regardless of their apparent condition, especially in waters with high salinity or conductivity. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage that can render high-cost components such as the tail casing or propeller carrier unusable.
