Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of marine propellers in saline and healthy environments. It acts within the cathodic protection system, sacrificing itself electrically so that critical parts such as the propeller shaft, transmission housing and tail components do not suffer deterioration due to the electrochemical action of seawater. In low-range and medium-power Yanmar outboard engines, the correct presence and condition of the anode is decisive to preserve the structural integrity of the propulsion unit throughout the entire navigation season. If this element is exhausted without being replaced in time, corrosion advances on the noble components of the engine, potentially causing irreparable damage to the tail and hydraulic contact surfaces.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its volume: when it has lost approximately half of its mass, it is essential to replace it before it stops offering effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at least once a season, coinciding with beaching or annual engine maintenance, and replace it preventively if it shows significant wear or signs of pitting appear on adjacent metal surfaces. Changing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the practice most recommended by professionals in the sector to avoid high-cost repairs to the outboard transmission or tail.
