Description

Function and technical context

This 18cc front hydraulic pump is part of the hydraulic power steering circuit, acting as a source of pressure that drives fluid through the valves and cylinders that govern the rudder or direction of the outboard or inboard engine. Mounted in the front part of the engine block, it is driven directly by the crankshaft or the auxiliary belt, generating the continuous flow necessary so that the pilot can maneuver with precision even at high speeds or with large displacement engines. A failure in this unit immediately translates into loss of steering assistance, a notable increase in steering effort and, in extreme cases, the inability to steer the boat safely. Its correct operation is equally essential for auxiliary systems that depend on hydraulic pressure, such as trims, interceptors or other hydraulic actuators installed on board.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a hydraulic steering pump include hard or uneven steering, high-pitched or whining noises when turning the steering wheel, hydraulic oil leaks at the front of the engine, and slow or inconsistent steering response. It is recommended to inspect the pump during each seasonal maintenance, checking the condition of the seals, the level and quality of the hydraulic fluid and the absence of abnormal vibrations; In engines with long working hours or that operate in high demand conditions, it is advisable to check them before symptoms appear. Replacing the pump preventively at the first signs of wear prevents serious breakdowns during navigation and protects the rest of the hydraulic circuit from contamination by metal particles.
