Description

Function and technical context

The aluminum anode kit for trim tab is designed to provide cathodic protection to the stern interceptor (trim tab) of the outboard or stereo engine, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice against galvanic corrosion. The trim tab is a small metal fin located at the bottom of the gearbox that, in addition to contributing to navigation stability, is permanently exposed to the action of salt or brackish water, becoming a critical point of galvanic attack. Without adequate anodic protection, the noble metals of the transmission case and the trim tab itself can degrade rapidly, compromising both the structural integrity and the correct operation of the steering and navigation adjustment. The aluminum alloy of these anodes is formulated for demanding marine environments, offering a controlled dissolution rate that ensures effective protection all season long.

When to replace this part?

Trim tab anodes must be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that threshold the cathodic protection capacity is seriously reduced. An obvious sign that the anode is depleted is the appearance of pitting or surface corrosion on the gearbox or the trim tab itself, indicating that the structural metal is already being electrochemically attacked. As a preventive rule, nautical maintenance professionals recommend replacing the anodes at least once a year or when removing the boat from the water at the end of the season, thus avoiding costly damage to hard-to-access components.
