Function and technical context

The sacrificial anodes for trim tab act as cathodic protection on the trim tab of the outboard or sterndrive motor, an area especially vulnerable to galvanic corrosion due to its continuous exposure to salt or brackish water. This aluminum anode kit is designed to be installed directly on the trim tab, a piece located at the bottom of the gear box, whose hydrodynamic mission is to stabilize the engine's reaction torque and improve the boat's steering. When the anodes are completely consumed without replacement, corrosion attacks the metal surfaces of the trim tab and lower foot housing, potentially causing serious structural damage, pitting of the cast aluminum, and ultimately compromising the integrity of the drivetrain. The aluminum alloy of these anodes makes them ideal for use in brackish and marine waters, offering effective protection without interfering with the hydraulic performance of the trim tab.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the trim tab anodes need replacement is the visible reduction in their mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume it should be replaced immediately, without waiting for it to disappear completely. It is recommended that the aluminum anodes be inspected and replaced at the beginning of each boating season or at least every 12 months if the boat is in the water continuously, as a depleted anode leaves the trim tab and lower casing completely unprotected from electrolytic corrosion. Changing these anodes preventively is one of the most economical maintenance interventions available, and avoids costly repairs to castings that are difficult to machine or replace at sea.
