Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the elements that protect the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that in the marine environment—especially in salt or brackish water—destroys the aluminum of the powerhead if there is no adequate active protection. This aluminum anode kit is designed specifically for the powerhead area, covering the points most exposed to corrosion on the top of the engine. Being made of aluminum alloy, these anodes are the ideal choice for use in salt water and brackish water, where zinc may be less effective and where magnesium would be contraindicated. If the anodes are completely consumed without being replaced, the block itself, the cylinder head and other aluminum components of the powerhead are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can lead to irreparable structural damage and costly engine repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the powerhead anodes need replacement is a reduction in mass of over 50%: when the anode has lost half its volume, its protective capacity decreases drastically and it must be replaced immediately. The usual recommendation in sailing is to check the condition of all sacrificial anodes at least once a season - or every 100-150 hours of navigation in highly corrosive waters - and replace them preventively if they show advanced wear, cracks or an excessively irregular surface. Changing the complete anode kit at the beginning of each season is the most prudent practice: the minimum cost of the anodes is not comparable to that of a powerhead repair due to severe galvanic corrosion.
