Function and technical context

The seal is a critical sealing part that seals the joint between the drive shaft and the marine engine housing. Its main function is to prevent leaks of lubricating fluids and, simultaneously, prevent the entry of salt water into the internal components of the propeller. In Yamaha engines, this seal works in the transmission-propulsion system, where it supports variable pressures and the constant friction of the rotating shaft. Wear or breakage of the seal can cause progressive loss of lubricant, accelerated corrosion of internal parts and, in serious cases, water entry that causes engine seizure and catastrophic failure.

When to replace this part?

Typical symptoms of a worn seal include oil stains around the output shaft, a visible reduction in lubricant level without apparent cause, and water in the crankcase after sailing in salt water. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the seal at each seasonal maintenance check and replace it preventively every 300-400 hours of operation or when any sign of exudation is observed. Changing the seal preventively is a minimal investment that avoids much more expensive repairs resulting from corrosion or engine seizure.
