Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is a fundamental piece in the cathodic protection of marine engines submerged or in prolonged contact with salt water. Its function is to preferably oxidize in seawater, preventing the noble metals of the engine (cast iron, aluminum and steel) from suffering galvanic corrosion. Installed in critical areas of the engine block, cylinder head or cooling pipes, the anode gradually wears away while protecting structural components. Without this sacrificial barrier, corrosion would penetrate the engine interior, compromising gaskets, seals and the integrity of water passages, resulting in leaks, loss of cooling and irreversible damage.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be inspected at the end of each boating season and replaced when it shows visible erosion greater than 50% of its volume or when it shows widespread surface corrosion. In brackish or high salinity waters, wear is significantly accelerated, requiring more frequent checks during the season. Preventive replacement is especially recommended before setting sail on long voyages, since the degradation of the anode in intensive navigation may not allow emergency maintenance; A worn anode leaves the engine exposed to accelerated corrosion that would lead to costly repairs and unplanned shutdowns at sea.
