Function and technical context

The propeller diabolo seal constitutes a critical sealing element at the interface between the drive shaft and the marine engine casing. Its main function is to prevent the infiltration of salt water into the transmission and lubrication systems, maintaining balanced hydrostatic pressure in an area subject to constant rotary movement. Installed in the shaft output area, it works directly exposed to the most severe conditions: sea water, temperature variations and continuous vibrations of the propeller. Failure of this component causes water to enter the gearbox, accelerated corrosion of internal gears, loss of lubrication and, ultimately, complete disablement of the marine transmission.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of seal wear include the presence of water in the transmission oil (milky emulsion or visible rust on the dipstick), progressive loss of oil from the shaft output area, and abnormal noises in the transmission accompanied by vibrations. Although there is no fixed maintenance interval, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the seal during each seasonal inspection and, especially, after sailing in waters with sediment or after slipping. Preventive replacement before infiltration occurs avoids costly repairs to the entire transmission and ensures reliability in offshore navigation.
