Function and technical context

The plunger is an essential component of the internal combustion system in outboard and marine engines. This part works inside the cylinder, performing an alternative linear movement that compresses the air-fuel mixture and transmits the force of gas expansion to the connecting rod and crankshaft. The piston is subjected to continuous cycles of extreme pressure and temperature, being essential for the generation of engine power. If it wears, cracks or loses its tightness, compression decreases significantly, causing loss of performance, increased fuel consumption and possible entry of water into the crankcase in adverse navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The piston must be replaced when a noticeable loss of compression is observed in one or more cylinders, abnormal vibrations during operation, persistent bluish smoke emissions or an increase in oil consumption. In engines with intense use or with many hours of navigation, it is recommended to check the condition of the pistons during each seasonal maintenance, especially if the engine has suffered severe overloads. Preventively replacing the pistons before critical deterioration avoids secondary damage to the cylinder liners and significantly more expensive repairs that compromise the seaworthiness of the vessel.
