The diabolo is a critical component in the power transmission system of marine engines, acting as a flexible coupling element between the crankshaft and the propeller. Its main function is to absorb and dampen torsional vibrations generated during acceleration and deceleration, thus protecting the propulsion and steering systems from excessive mechanical loads. Installed in the shaft line, the diabolo ensures smooth and efficient transmission of power while preventing premature wear of bearings, water seals and transmission components. A deteriorated or worn diabolo compromises shaft alignment, increasing the overall vibration of the boat and reducing propulsive efficiency.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptoms of diabolo wear include abnormal vibrations noticeable in the rudder, control console or boat structure, especially during acceleration or engine speed changes. Rubbing or clicking noises may also be observed coming from the shaft line, as well as a loss of rigidity in the steering system or excessive play in the propeller. It is recommended to preventively inspect and replace the diabolo every 5-7 years of regular use or after 800-1,000 hours of navigation, depending on the operating conditions and maintenance performed. Early replacement prevents serious breakdowns at sea and ensures the operational safety of the vessel.
