Function and technical context

The lower vertical shaft seal is a critical sealing part that is positioned at the base of the vertical transmission system of outboard and inboard motors. Its main function is to prevent water and humidity from entering the interior of the gearbox, protecting the lubrication and gear components from corrosion and deterioration. This seal works in an environment of high humidity and constant pressure, where the continuous renewal of the cooling water and engine vibrations require absolute tightness. The failure of this part allows salt infiltration that degrades the transmission oil, causing loss of lubricating capacity, damage to gears and, in serious cases, blocking of the transmission during navigation.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of seal wear include oil emanation around the transmission area, presence of emulsion (water and oil mixture) when checking the lubricant level, or water entering the gearbox after prolonged stops. It is recommended to inspect it during each seasonal service and replace it preventively every 5-7 years of active use or after any intervention that requires access to the vertical axis. Preventively changing this seal before it fails avoids complex and costly offshore transmission repairs.
