The characteristic symptoms of ring wear include progressive loss of compression verifiable with a pressure gauge, persistent bluish smoke in the exhaust (indicative of oil burning), difficult starting in cold conditions, abnormal increase in lubricant consumption between changes and reduced overall engine performance that affects navigation. For recreational boat engines, it is recommended to check the condition of the rings every 500-800 hours of operation or at each seasonal inspection, especially if loss of compression has been detected.
