The head gasket is the critical sealing element that joins the engine block to the cylinder head, ensuring the tightness of the combustion chamber and cooling passages. On Yamaha outboard engines, this gasket must withstand high compression pressures, repeated thermal cycling, and constant exposure to the marine environment. Its deterioration allows the leakage of combustion gases, loss of power, the entry of cooling water into the crankcase and, in advanced cases, engine seizure due to internal corrosion.

When to replace this part?

Symptoms of head gasket failure include white smoke emission from the exhaust, loss of coolant without apparent cause, presence of water in the engine oil (milky emulsion), and abnormal vibrations during operation. Although there is no established interval of hours as with filters or impellers, this part requires inspection during each seasonal maintenance and preventive replacement if loss of tightness, discoloration or corrosion is detected in the contact area. Changing the gasket preventively during cylinder head work avoids complete engine repairs in difficult navigation conditions.
