Description

Function and technical context

The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of air into the intake manifold of the diesel engine, allowing more fuel to be burned per cycle and thus obtaining greater power without increasing the displacement. It works within the intake and exhaust system, harnessing the energy of the exhaust gases to drive a turbine that compresses the incoming air. In industrial and marine engines of the Volvo Penta TAD series, the turbo is decisive in maintaining the power and torque performance required by work in high-demand conditions. A turbocharger in poor condition causes significant loss of power, increased fuel consumption, black or blue smoke from the exhaust and, in advanced cases, severe damage to the engine due to lack of air or oil entering the combustion chamber. The part is manufactured by SLP (Swedish Lorry Parts), a Swedish specialist with extensive experience in components for Volvo Penta engines, guaranteeing fit and performance in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged turbocharger include noticeable loss of power or slow acceleration, excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe (black, blue or white), abnormal metallic noise or whistling noise from the running turbo, and high oil consumption without a visible external leak. It is recommended to inspect the turbocharger during each major seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the axial and radial play of the shaft, the condition of the seals and the cleanliness of the feed and return oil passages. Replacing the turbo at the first signs of failure prevents chain damage to the engine that can lead to very high-cost repairs.
