Description

Function and technical context

The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of air into the engine cylinders, increasing intake pressure and allowing more efficient combustion. It works within the engine's intake and exhaust system: it harnesses the kinetic energy of the exhaust gases to spin a turbine that compresses the inlet air. In Volvo Penta TD, TID, TWD and TAD series marine diesel engines, the turbo is a critical element in maintaining power, torque and fuel efficiency. A deteriorated turbocharger causes a noticeable loss of power, increased consumption, black or blue smoke in the exhaust and, in serious cases, severe damage to the inside of the engine due to poor lubrication or oil entering the intake. This turbo has been manufactured by SLP (Swedish Lorry Parts), a Swedish specialist in components for Volvo Penta engines, with quality standards comparable to those of the standard part.

When to replace the turbocharger?

The most common symptoms of a bad turbo include progressive loss of power, excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe (black from excess fuel or blue from burning oil), high-pitched metallic noise or abnormal vibration coming from the engine compartment, and high oil consumption without visible leaks. In continuous duty marine engines such as the TD100, TWD1010G or TAD1030 series, it is recommended to inspect the turbocharger at each seasonal inspection, checking the axial and radial play of the shaft, the condition of the oil seals and the cleanliness of the lubrication passages. Acting preventively at the first symptoms avoids chain failures that can affect the engine block and lead to high-cost interventions.
