Description

Function and technical context

The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of compressed air into the engine cylinders, thus increasing combustion efficiency and available power. It works within the intake and exhaust system of the diesel engine, harnessing the energy of the exhaust gases to move its turbine and compress the incoming air. In Volvo Penta TD and TAD series engines, such as the TD520GE and TAD520GE, the turbo is a critical element to achieve the performance levels specified by the manufacturer. A damaged turbocharger causes a noticeable loss of power, increased fuel consumption, black or blue smoke from the exhaust and, in severe cases, can cause damage to the inside of the engine due to poor lubrication or oil contamination. This component is manufactured by SLP — Swedish Lorry Parts, a Swedish specialist in spare parts for Volvo Penta engines, with manufacturing quality comparable to the factory specification.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a turbocharger in poor condition are the progressive loss of power and torque, the presence of excessive smoke from the exhaust pipe (especially bluish, indicative of burned oil), abnormal whistling or rattling noises coming from the turbo assembly, and possible oil leaks into the intake manifold. It is recommended to check the condition of the turbo during each major maintenance intervention and, in any case, when detecting any of these symptoms, since continuing to operate with a failed turbo can lead to severe damage to the cylinder head or engine block. Replacing the turbocharger preventively at the first signs of wear avoids unplanned stops and high-cost repairs while the boat is in full operation.
