The turbocharger is the component responsible for forcing a greater amount of pressurized air into the engine cylinders, thus increasing the density of the air-fuel mixture and, with it, the power and performance of the engine unit. It works within the intake and exhaust system, harnessing the kinetic energy of the exhaust gases to drive the turbine that compresses the incoming air. In high-displacement industrial and marine engines such as the Volvo Penta TWD series, the turbo is a critical element: its correct operation guarantees the nominal performance of the engine and compliance with emissions parameters. A deteriorated turbocharger can cause severe loss of power, excessive fuel consumption, black or blue smoke emissions, and even damage to the cylinder head or pistons due to abnormal combustion temperature and pressure. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad turbocharger include a noticeable loss of power or torque, bluish or black smoke from the exhaust, unusual metallic noise (whisping or rattling) coming from the turbo under acceleration, and the presence of oil in the intake manifold or air filter. In engines for stationary or marine applications with high working hours, it is recommended to inspect the turbo at each major service or when any of these symptoms are detected, since the wear of the internal bearings can progress rapidly if action is not taken in time. Replacing the turbocharger preventively at the first signs of wear prevents chain failures that can affect the cylinder head, injectors or the entire engine.
