Description

Function and technical context

Conical sacrificial anodes like this one act as electrochemical shields that protect the vessel's submerged metal components from galvanic corrosion. Installed on Vetus tailshafts, hulls or propulsion accessories, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner rather than allowing the structural metal to do so. Its 84 mm conical geometry facilitates precise adjustment on the propeller shaft, guaranteeing continuous electrical contact and an optimal sacrificial surface. Without effective cathodic protection, the structural zinc of the shaft, propeller or supports could degrade rapidly, compromising the mechanical integrity of the transmission and generating high-cost repairs.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay to keep the cathodic protection active. In boats that remain in the water continuously, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least every six months and replace it at the beginning of each nautical season or after each winter. Changing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft or propeller, the repair or replacement of which multiplies by many times the cost of a simple sacrificial anode.
