ANODE VETUS

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are essential elements in the cathodic protection of boats, responsible for protecting submerged metal parts - such as the hull, tail shaft, propeller and lower parts of the engine - against galvanic corrosion. This Vetus anode (ref. TEN03503) acts as a sacrificial metal: being made with a more electronegative material than the components it protects, it corrodes before the structural or mechanical parts of greater value. Its correct operation within the cathodic protection system prevents progressive and irreversible damage to metals such as aluminum, bronze or stainless steel present in the transmission and the underwater assembly of the boat. Without a healthy anode, galvanic corrosion can silently degrade critical parts until they are completely unusable.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass, at which point it no longer offers effective protection. It is recommended to inspect the sacrificial anodes at least once a season—ideally at the annual beaching—and replace them preventively if they show advanced wear, whitish discoloration or surface fragmentation. Replacing the anode preventively is one of the most economical maintenance interventions available and avoids costly repairs to the shaft, propeller or aluminum components of the powertrain.
