The 434137 thermostat (equivalent part number REC434137) is the regulating element of the cooling circuit in medium- and high-power Johnson and Evinrude outboard motors. Its function is to control the opening and closing of the cooling water passage based on the block temperature, ensuring that the engine reaches and maintains its optimal operating temperature as quickly as possible. When the thermostat fails or becomes stuck, the engine may suddenly overheat—with the consequent risk of serious damage to the cylinder head, gaskets, and pistons—or, conversely, run constantly cold, leading to excessive fuel consumption, internal carbon buildup, and accelerated wear of the cylinder walls. This is a critical component within the seawater cooling system of these engines, and its proper functioning is essential to preserving the mechanical integrity of the propulsion system.

When should this part be replaced?

The most common symptoms indicating a faulty thermostat in Johnson and Evinrude engines are: a triggered temperature alarm or a gauge needle that rises rapidly into the red zone, the engine taking too long to reach operating temperature, irregular cooling water flow or no water discharge from the cooling pilot, and a loss of power with no apparent cause. It is recommended to inspect and replace the thermostat at every seasonal service or, at a minimum, every two years of use, as the heat-sensitive wax in the element loses elasticity over time even if there are no visible symptoms. Replacing it as a preventive measure is the most cost-effective way to avoid a forced shutdown due to overheating and the costly damage it can cause on the open sea.
