Function and technical context

This anode kit for Suzuki outboard motors from 150 to 350 hp is part of the boat's galvanic protection system. Magnesium (MG) anodes act as a sacrificial mass: they corrode in a controlled manner to protect the noble metal parts of the engine - such as the crankcase, propeller, shaft and foot components - against galvanic and electrolytic corrosion. Magnesium is the recommended material for boats that navigate in fresh water or waters with low conductivity, where it offers more active protection than zinc or aluminum anodes. Without effective anodic protection, metal engine components are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise the structural integrity of the outboard and lead to costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season, and replaced when they have lost approximately half their mass, show irregular erosion, or have been worn down to the internal metal support. A completely exhausted anode no longer protects the engine, so the symptoms of failure manifest themselves as pitting, superficial corrosion and loss of material in noble parts of the engine foot or propeller. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each season, or after 200-300 hours of use, is common practice among professionals in the nautical sector to ensure continuous engine protection.
