Function and technical context

The propeller shaft is the central transmission component in the underwater propulsion unit: it transfers the engine torque from the bevel gear pinion to the propeller, being directly responsible for the thrust of the boat. It works in the lower propulsion system (lower unit), continuously subjected to torsional stresses, axial loads and the aggressiveness of the marine environment. A damaged, bent or excessive play shaft causes abnormal vibrations, loss of propulsion performance and even failure of the water seal, with the consequent risk of water entering the lower unit and serious transmission failure. Reference 57610-96311 is the current replacement part for Suzuki outboard motors in the DF and DT ranges from 20 to 30 hp, including the most recent DF25A and DF30A series.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged propeller shaft are: perceptible vibration in the engine foot or hull during navigation, metallic noise in the lower unit, visible lateral play in the propeller with the engine off, or visible deformation of the shaft after an impact with a submerged object. It is recommended to inspect the shaft during each seasonal maintenance and replace it immediately after any strong propeller hit, without waiting for the symptoms to worsen: continuing to sail with a bent shaft shortens the life of the seals, bearings and gears of the lower unit, multiplying the cost of the repair.
