Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as a galvanic protector of the propulsion system and the submerged metal components of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the most noble parts - crankcase, propeller, shaft and engine body - against galvanic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. It works within the engine's cathodic protection system, absorbing the corrosion current that would otherwise progressively attack the structural metals of the powertrain. Its deterioration or total loss leaves the critical metal elements of the outboard exposed, which can lead to severe and irreversible damage to high-cost components such as the water pump housing, the tail shaft or the internal surfaces of the block.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass: from that point on, its protective capacity is drastically reduced and the motor is left vulnerable. In engines that operate in salt water or in areas with high electrical conductivity, it is recommended to inspect the anode during each seasonal maintenance - at least once a year - and replace it without waiting for it to be completely used up. Changing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid large-scale structural repairs in the shortest possible time.
