Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode acts as cathodic protection of the propulsion system, sacrificing itself electrochemically to protect the metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion caused by immersion in salt, brackish or contaminated water. Integrated into the propulsion unit, it intercepts the flow of galvanic current that would otherwise attack critical components such as the propeller shaft, cone gear housing or tail surfaces. The loss of anodic protection can lead to accelerated corrosion of high-cost parts, compromising the structural integrity of the engine and the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its mass due to wear: if it appears very reduced, with cracks or whitish deposits that indicate passivation, it no longer fulfills its protective function. It is recommended that the anode be inspected and replaced at least once a season or each time the boat is taken out of the water for maintenance; In areas with high water conductivity or intensive use, the review should be carried out every six months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to propulsion components that are difficult to access and have high replacement costs.
