Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a cathodic protection element in the anti-electrolysis system of the outboard motor, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the noble metal parts of the engine - casings, shafts, propellers and other aluminum or steel components - against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt, brackish or water with a high mineral content. Zinc being a more active metal on the galvanic scale, the anode preferentially corrodes before the structural components of the engine, its function being directly proportional to the long-term mechanical integrity of the propulsion unit. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can cause serious and irreversible damage to high-cost components, compromising the operation of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that the zinc anode must be replaced is a reduction in its mass of around 50% or more compared to its size: when the zinc is excessively worn, disintegrated or has partially disappeared, the cathodic protection ceases and corrosion directly attacks the metal parts of the engine. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the anodes at least once per nautical season—or every time the boat leaves the water for maintenance—and replace them preventively before wear exceeds that critical threshold. Renewing the anode at each annual inspection is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid high-cost repairs to the outboard housing, shaft or transmission.
