The stern seal kit groups together the sealing elements that protect the drive shaft in the coupling zone between the engine block and the reduction gearbox/stern drive, preventing seawater from entering the bearings and the interior of the propulsion unit. It operates in the transmission and propulsion system of the outboard motor, acting as a sealing barrier between the aquatic environment and internal mechanical components subjected to continuous rotation. A degraded seal or one with damaged lips causes infiltration of salt or fresh water that contaminates lubrication, accelerates internal corrosion, and can result in shaft seizure or premature bearing failure. When to Replace This Part?

The most common signs of wear in the stern seals are the presence of whitish emulsion or foam in the reduction gearbox oil—an unmistakable sign of water contamination—visible moisture in the shaft seal area, and lubricant consumption higher than normal. It is recommended to inspect the condition of these seals at each stern oil change (normal interval of 100 hours or at the start of each season) and proceed with preventive replacement upon any sign of deterioration of the rubber lip.
