Description

Function and technical context

The stern disc anode without a Ø 100 mm hole is a cathodic protection element designed to defend the submerged metal surfaces of the boat against galvanic corrosion. Made of zinc (ZN), it acts as a sacrificial metal: being more electronegative than stainless steel, aluminum or bronze of propellers, shafts and stern covers, it is it that corrodes instead of the structural components of the propulsion system. Its smooth disc format without central perforation makes it especially suitable for mounting on flat surfaces of the stern where uniform protection is required without a central anchoring point, fixing it using marine adhesive or using perimeter fastening systems. Without active cathodic protection and in good condition, marine electrolysis can degrade propellers, tail shafts, keels and other parts that require high replacement costs in a few weeks.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning of each season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass: a very irregular, whitish or reduced surface by half indicates that the anode has completed its protection cycle and no longer offers sufficient sacrifice. On vessels that remain in the water throughout the season or that navigate in ports with high eddy current density, it is common for the replacement interval to be less than one year. Changing the anode preventively before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid pitting of propellers, deterioration of the shaft and costly repairs in the dock.
