Function and Technical Context
The stator is the static component of the ignition and electrical charging system in outboard motors, responsible for generating alternating current through electromagnetic induction by interacting with the rotating magnetic flywheel. It works directly within the ignition and electrical power system, supplying the necessary energy to both the ignition coils and battery charging during engine operation. In OMC engines of the Johnson and Evinrude series in the 60 to 75 HP ranges, this stator with reference 581957 —later replaced by reference 583724 (complete stator assembly)— is a key component for ignition stability at any engine speed. If the stator fails, the engine may experience intermittent ignition misfires, power loss, or become completely inoperative due to lack of power supply to the ignition system.
When to Replace This Part?
The most common symptoms of a faulty stator in outboard motors include difficult or impossible starting, unstable idle with engine stalling, ignition misfires at certain RPMs, or complete loss of electrical charging. The stator has no fixed replacement interval by hours, but it should be inspected during each seasonal maintenance by checking the resistance of its windings with a multimeter and verifying the absence of burns or cracks in the winding. Preventively replacing the stator at the first symptoms avoids being stranded at sea and prevents secondary damage to the power module or rectifier-regulator.
