Function and Technical Context

The trim and tilt relay is the electromechanical component responsible for managing the polarity reversal of the electric motor in the hydraulic trim system, allowing the outboard motor to be raised and lowered in a controlled manner. It operates within the electrical control circuit of the trim and tilt system, functioning as a power switch that channels current from the battery to the hydraulic motor according to the pilot's button command. Without a relay in proper working condition, the trim system ceases to respond fully or partially, preventing adjustment of the motor angle relative to the transom and compromising navigation performance, fuel consumption, and safety during beaching maneuvers or operation in shallow waters. This relay is compatible with multiple outboard motor brands and series thanks to its industry-standard design, being referenced under the codes 6E5-8195A-01 (Yamaha), 5031483 / 5032197 (OMC/Johnson/Evinrude), 134 / 804281T (Mercury/Mariner) and 38410-94550 (Suzuki), among others.

When to Replace This Part?

The most common symptoms of a defective trim/tilt relay are: the trim system does not respond when pressing the control (neither raises nor lowers), the motor responds in only one direction (raises or lowers only), a clicking or audible click is heard when pressing the button but the hydraulic motor does not start, or intermittent and involuntary activations occur. Since this is a component subject to constant vibration, moisture, and repeated electrical charge cycles, it is advisable to inspect it during each seasonal service and replace it at the first sign of irregular operation. Replacing the relay preventively at the first signs of failure prevents being stranded with the motor in an incorrect position, a situation that is especially critical during anchoring, beaching, or solo cruising.
