Description

Function and technical context

The short collar for 22 mm shaft is a component of the drive shaft sealing and clamping system on boats with outboard or inboard engines. Its main function is to fix and center the propeller shaft, avoiding unwanted axial displacements that would compromise the alignment between the propeller and the transmission assembly. Working in the connection area between the shaft and the lower casing, it acts as a mechanical retention element that absorbs the stresses generated during propulsion. A damaged collar or one with excessive play can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft, premature wear of the adjacent seals and even water entry into the casing, with consequent damage to the bearings and gears of the conical group.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate wear of an axle collar are: perceptible vibration in the throttle or hull at medium-high speed, a dry metallic noise in the tail of the engine during acceleration, and visible or tactile play in the axle when inspected with the engine off. It is recommended to check the condition of the collar during each seasonal maintenance or whenever work is done on the drive unit to replace shaft seals or bearings. Replacing it preventively when detecting the slightest play is the most economical practice: it avoids chain damage to higher cost components such as tapered bearings or the shaft itself.
