Description

Function and technical context

The 60mm STD aluminum shaft collar is an axial positioning and fastening element that works directly on the boat's drive shaft, ensuring that it maintains its correct longitudinal position within the horn or bearing housing. It is part of the mechanical transmission system between the engine and the propeller, being responsible for absorbing the axial thrust forces generated by the propulsion. Without this component correctly installed, the shaft can move forward or backward during navigation, causing abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear on the horn, loss of propulsion efficiency and even the entry of water into the hull due to deterioration of the stuffing box or static seal. The aluminum (AL) version offers a good strength-to-weight ratio and anti-corrosion performance in marine environments when combined with appropriate cathodic protection of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or damaged shaft collar include noticeable vibration in the shaft during navigation, excessive axial play when moving the shaft manually with the engine stopped, or visible rubbing marks, galvanic corrosion and deformation on the collar itself or on the shaft mating surfaces. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness of the fixing screws, the integrity of the aluminum and the absence of active corrosion. Replacing this component preventively in the event of any sign of play or deterioration prevents serious breakdowns in the transmission system that can leave the boat inoperative during navigation.
