Description

Function and technical context

The 35mm shaft collar works in the boat's transmission system, acting as a retaining element and axial support for the tail shaft. Its mission is to maintain the shaft in the correct longitudinal position, avoiding movements that compromise the alignment between the engine and the propeller. Made of aluminum, it offers a strength-to-weight ratio suitable for salt and fresh water environments, although its correct installation and maintenance are decisive to preserve the integrity of the propulsion system. A damaged or poorly adjusted collar can cause abnormal vibrations in the shaft, premature wear of the line bearings and, in extreme cases, water entry through the stuffing box or horn.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad shaft collar include noticeable vibrations in the console or hull while sailing, metallic noises in the shaft line, and excessive axial play detected when moving the shaft manually with the engine stopped. It is recommended to inspect the collar during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the appearance of galvanic corrosion, cracks or deformations in the aluminum, as well as the condition of the fixing screws. Replacing the collar preventively when the first signs of wear are seen prevents more costly damage to the shaft line and ensures safe and efficient propulsion.
