Function and technical context

El collarín de eje de 28 mm es un elemento de sujeción y posicionamiento axial que trabaja directamente sobre el eje de transmisión de la cola de popa o del sistema de accionamiento de la hélice. Its main function is to fix the longitudinal position of the axle, avoiding unwanted axial displacements that compromise the alignment of the drive assembly. Made of aluminum, it offers a strength-to-weight ratio suitable for work environments where galvanic corrosion must be controlled through the use of materials compatible with the rest of the drive train. If this component degrades or loses its holding capacity, the shaft can move axially, causing abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear of the sealing seals and, in extreme cases, water entering the interior of the hull through the stuffing box.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a deteriorated shaft collar include noticeable vibrations in the bridge or hull while underway, clunking noise from the shaft compartment, and detectable axial play when manually moving the shaft with the engine stopped. It is recommended to inspect the collar during each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to the appearance of cracks, deformations or irregular friction marks on the contact surface. Replacing it preventively when detecting any excessive axial play avoids secondary damage to the stuffing box, thrust bearing and seals, the repair of which at the dock is considerably more expensive.
