Function and technical context

Sacrificial zinc bar anodes are fundamental elements within the cathodic protection system of vessels and submerged structures. This zinc bar acts as a galvanic anode, attracting electrochemical corrosion that would otherwise attack noble metals such as bronze, aluminum or stainless steel present in the hull, propellers, shafts and accessories of the boat. As zinc is a metal with a greater oxidation potential, it is sacrificed in a controlled manner, protecting the rest of the metal components in contact with water. Its correct installation is especially critical in salty and brackish waters, where the electrical conductivity of the medium drastically accelerates galvanic corrosion processes.

When to replace this part?

Zinc bar anodes should be inspected at least once per nautical season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, since below that level they no longer offer effective protection. Symptoms of poor cathodic protection include pitting and visible corrosion on propellers, propeller shafts, exhaust elbows or hull hardware, as well as premature deterioration of antifouling paints in localized areas. The professional recommendation is to preventively replace the zinc bar at each annual grounding, without waiting for complete wear, given that the cost of an anode is insignificant compared to the repair of a shaft or propeller damaged by corrosion.
