Description

Function and technical context

The Riva Opera sacrificial anode acts as a galvanic protector of the submerged metal elements of the boat, consuming in a controlled manner to prevent electrolytic corrosion from attacking the hull, shaft, propeller and other components of the hull. It works within the cathodic protection system, which is the first line of defense against marine corrosion in both saltwater and fresh or brackish water. Its correct installation is critical: without active galvanic protection and in good condition, the noble metals of the propulsion assembly and hull suffer accelerated and irreversible deterioration that can compromise the structural integrity of the boat and lead to costly failures in the shaft, horn or bronze accessories. The Riva Opera format guarantees a geometry and zinc alloy composition specifically designed to offer optimal performance in recreational and professional nautical installations.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs to be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass: at that point it no longer offers effective cathodic protection and adjacent metal components begin to corrode. In boats in regular use, it is recommended to inspect the condition of the anode at each seasonal docking and replace it at the beginning of each nautical season or sooner if the inspection reveals advanced wear, pitting in nearby metals or a whitish discoloration of the zinc. Replacing the anode preventively is the lowest cost maintenance measure that exists to avoid the repair or replacement of high-value submerged metal parts such as propellers, shafts or exchangers.
