Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is a cathodic protection component installed directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, acting as a sacrificial metal to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal parts of the propulsion system. Being manufactured from zinc or equivalent alloy, this Reggiani anode for 25mm shaft corrodes in a controlled manner in place of the most valuable components such as the shaft, propeller or rudder, thus protecting the structural integrity of the submerged drive train. Its correct installation on the propulsion shaft is essential to prolong the useful life of metal elements in contact with salt or brackish water, where electrolytic corrosion acts especially aggressively. A depleted or missing anode can lead to accelerated corrosion of the tail shaft, with the consequent risk of loss of tightness in the stuffing box and severe damage to the horn or shaft bearings.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, with the annual beaching being the ideal time for their review and preventive replacement. The clearest sign that the anode is exhausted is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it loses protective effectiveness and must be replaced without delay; It is also indicative to find signs of pitting or incipient corrosion on the stainless steel shaft itself adjacent to the anode. Replacing the 25 axis Reggiani anode at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical preventive measure to avoid replacing the entire axis, an expense incomparably greater than the cost of this sacrificial element.
