Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the propeller shaft, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve the submerged metal parts of the vessel. This Radice anode for 40 mm shaft works in the underwater transmission system, protecting it against galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist in a marine environment. Without correct anodic protection on the shaft, the electrolytic corrosion process progressively attacks the shaft itself, the horn, the aquamarine bearings and the propeller, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the entire transmission line. The reference TEN00403 corresponds to the Radice range of zinc anodes, recognized in the nautical sector for its high alloy purity and its protection effectiveness in salty and brackish waters.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay so that the cathodic protection is not interrupted. Industry best practice is to inspect and replace zinc anodes at each annual or seasonal beaching, regardless of their apparent condition, as a depleted anode leaves the shaft and appendages completely unprotected from electrolysis. Replacing the anode preventatively before each launch is the lowest cost maintenance measure that prevents severe damage and costly repairs to the shaft or horn during navigation.
