Description

Function and technical context

This MTF series shaft anode is designed for propulsion shafts with diameters between 35 and 50 mm, acting as active galvanic protection of the submerged transmission system. Its mission is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to protect the shaft, propeller cone and adjacent metal components from galvanic corrosion caused by immersion in sea, brackish or fresh water. Being the element with the lowest electrochemical potential of the assembly, it absorbs the corrosive attack that would otherwise damage structurally critical parts of the drive train. The MTF alloy (magnesium-titanium-fluorine or equivalent high-efficiency formulation depending on the manufacturer) makes it especially suitable for fresh waters or waters with low conductivity, where conventional zinc anodes perform below what is necessary.

When to replace this part?

A shaft anode should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, as below that volume it no longer provides effective cathodic protection. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode manifest themselves in the form of pitting and visible corrosion on the stainless steel shaft, erosion on the propeller hub, or galvanic attack on nearby bronze surfaces. It is recommended to replace the anode preventively at each annual beaching; Failure to do so can lead to severe damage to the shaft or horn that requires repairs at a much higher cost than the part.
