Function and technical context

The Ferreti shaft anode for 50mm shafts is a cathodic protection element specifically designed to act as an electrochemical sacrifice in the vessel's propulsion line. Its function is to protect submerged metal parts—propulsion shaft, propeller and other transmission components—against galvanic corrosion produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with seawater or fresh water. By preferentially degrading, the anode prevents corrosion from attacking the structural and mechanical elements of the propulsion system, the repair or replacement of which would be considerably more expensive. Correct protection of the propulsion shaft is critical to guarantee the integrity of the seals, bearings and horns, elements that work under continuous stress and are especially vulnerable to pitting due to corrosion.

When to replace this part?

The main indicator that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is its level of visual wear: when the anode has lost 50% to 60% of its mass, it has reached the limit of its useful life and must be replaced immediately for the cathodic protection to remain effective. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the anodes at each beaching and replace them at the beginning of each nautical season or, at most, once a year. Acting preventively by replacing the anode is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid serious damage due to corrosion to the shaft, propeller or horn, breakdowns that can leave the boat inoperative far from the port.
