Description

Function and technical context

This 7/8-inch diameter shaft anode is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial element on the propulsion shaft to prevent galvanic corrosion that affects submerged metals. Being installed directly on the propeller shaft, it concentrates in itself the electrochemical attack produced by the potential difference between different metals in contact with sea or lake water. Without adequate cathodic protection, the tailshaft, bearings, horn, and other metal driveline components would be exposed to accelerated corrosion that would compromise the structural integrity of the propulsion system. The CMXC-02 reference is designed specifically for 7/8 inch shafts, ensuring optimal fit and electrical contact for effective protection.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately half of their mass, presenting an irregular, porous or noticeably reduced surface with respect to the initial size. If incipient corrosion is observed on the propulsion shaft itself – pitting, reddish spots or rough surface – it is an unequivocal sign that the anode has exhausted its protective capacity and should have been replaced sooner. The recommended practice by nautical maintenance professionals is to replace all the boat's anodes at the beginning of each boating season, without waiting for them to be completely consumed, since the cost of a new anode is minimal compared to repairing or replacing an axle damaged by galvanic corrosion.
