ANODE SHAFT 50 MM
Description
Function and technical context
The CMX-50 shaft anode is a cathodic protection element designed specifically for 50mm diameter propulsion shafts. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner to protect the shaft, propeller and other submerged metal components from galvanic corrosion caused by contact with salt or brackish water. When installed directly over the tailshaft, it creates an electrochemical barrier that absorbs corrosive attack that would otherwise degrade the stainless steel or bronze of the driveline structural components. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, structural weakening and loss of integrity, compromising the safety of the vessel and leading to high-cost repairs.
When to replace this part?
Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual docking of the vessel. The clearest sign that the CMX-50 anode needs replacement is when it has lost more than 50% of its mass: from that point on, its protection capacity decreases drastically and the shaft is exposed to galvanic corrosion. In high salinity environments or with high eddy currents, it is advisable to check the condition of the anode mid-season; Replacing it preventively at each tune-up is the common practice among naval mechanics to avoid irreversible damage to the tail shaft.
