Function and technical context

The shaft anode is the key element of the motorboat cathodic protection system, specifically designed to protect the propulsion shaft from galvanic corrosion caused by prolonged immersion in salt or brackish water. Being a sacrificial metal, this component oxidizes in a controlled manner before the metal shaft does, preserving the structural integrity of the transmission line. Its correct installation on the 40 mm axle guarantees that electrolysis does not compromise the material of the axle, the coils, the seal or other elements of the transmission. Without effective cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, in advanced cases, breakage during navigation with the mechanical and safety consequences that this implies.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably during docking or annual boat maintenance. The clearest sign that it is necessary to change them is when they have lost between 50% and 70% of their mass, since below that threshold they stop offering effective protection; It is also advisable to replace them if they have a very irregular surface, eroded or with whitish deposits that indicate exhaustion of the material. As a preventive rule for nautical mechanics, it is best to change the shaft anodes at each seasonal tune-up without waiting for them to be completely consumed, since the cost of a new anode is insignificant compared to that of a repair or replacement of the propulsion shaft.
