Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the noble metal components of the vessel. This zinc anode for 1-3/8'' shaft acts as a sacrificial electrode on the transmission shaft, neutralizing the galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as seawater or fresh water. Without this protection, the propeller shaft, horn, and bronze or stainless steel fittings are exposed to an accelerated corrosion process that can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission and lead to costly shaft repairs or horn replacement.

When to replace this shaft anode?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is observed that it has considerably reduced its size or has an irregular and severely eroded surface, it should be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the shaft anodes at each beaching or, at least, once per nautical season, since their useful life depends directly on the aggressiveness of the water where the boat operates, being much longer in salty or brackish waters. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most common practice among nautical maintenance professionals, thus avoiding being left without cathodic protection in the middle of navigation and facing damage to axles or accessories at a much higher cost.
