ANODE SHAFT 1-1/2
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the boat's propulsion shaft, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect the shaft, propeller and other submerged metal components from galvanic corrosion. Being the least noble metal of the set, the anode corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the most valuable structural elements, preserving the integrity of the shaft and prolonging its useful life. This protection system is especially critical in salt and brackish water environments, where electrochemical corrosion can irreversibly damage a shaft in a few seasons if adequate protection is not available. The CMC-7 anode is designed for 1-1/2-inch diameter shafts, fitting precisely to ensure optimal electrical contact and effective protection throughout the boating season.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that a shaft anode has reached the limit of its useful life is a reduction in mass by more than 50%, indicating that it no longer offers sufficient protection; In extreme cases, the almost complete disappearance of the anode may be accompanied by visible pitting or discoloration on the shaft itself or on the propeller. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anode at least once a season, ideally at the annual grounding inspection, regardless of its visual appearance, since a depleted anode leaves unprotected components whose repair or replacement involves a much higher cost. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the simplest and most economical measure to avoid structural damage to the propulsion shaft and propeller.
