Description

Function and technical context

This zinc rudder anode in even format with a diameter of 47 mm acts as a cathodic protection element on the boat's rudder, sacrificing itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the metal surfaces of the rudder and stock. Being made of zinc (ZN), it is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where electrolytic corrosion is more aggressive. Its mounting in pairs guarantees a balanced distribution of protection around the rudder pintle or axis, ensuring complete cathodic coverage. Without good anodic protection, the noble metal of the rudder is exposed to accelerated corrosion, which can compromise the structural integrity of the boat's steering and lead to costly repairs or even complete rudder replacement.

When to replace this part?

Rudder anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present cracks or have partially detached from the support. A clear sign that the anode has stopped working properly is the appearance of pitting or visible erosion on the metal surface of the rudder or on adjacent hardware. As a professional rule, it is recommended to renew the zinc anodes at least once a season or after prolonged wintering, since an exhausted anode leaves the boat completely unprotected against galvanic corrosion, with the consequent risk of structural damage that can multiply the maintenance cost.
