Function and technical context

The reverse gear is a key component of the reverse gear system in the outboard gearbox. Its mission is to transmit the engine torque to the propeller in reverse direction when the pilot selects the reverse position, allowing the boat to reverse. It works inside the lower gearbox, in constant contact with the forward and propulsion pinions, supporting significant torsional and frictional efforts. A deteriorated reverse gear can cause loss of response in reverse, metallic noises when engaging or, in advanced cases, the inability to maintain rearward thrust, compromising safety during docking and anchoring maneuvers.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of wear on the reverse gear are: difficulty engaging reverse, vibration or rattling when selecting reverse gear, and in more serious cases, gear slippage or sustained metallic noise while driving in reverse. It is recommended to inspect the condition of the lower gearbox sprockets at each disassembly of the lower unit or at least during annual seasonal maintenance, especially if the boat operates in frequent anchoring areas with intensive reversing maneuvers. Replacing the reverse gear pinion preventively if there is any sign of wear prevents major transmission breakdowns that can leave the boat inoperative far from port.
