Function and technical context

The reverse gear is the key gear within the lower bevel gear of the outboard, responsible for reversing the direction of rotation of the propeller shaft when the operator selects reverse gear. It is part of the transmission train located at the foot of the engine, working together with the forward pinion and the leading bevel pinion to redirect the engine torque in the opposite direction to the direction of navigation. Its structural integrity is decisive for the maneuverability of the boat: if the pinion teeth deteriorate or fracture, reverse engagement becomes impossible or erratic, with the added risk that metal fragments contaminate the foot oil and accelerate wear of the entire lower transmission assembly. This component covers a wide range of Suzuki DT and DF series engines, as well as Johnson and Evinrude BJ, E and J series units that share identical transmission specifications.

When to replace this part?

The most common signs of reverse gear deterioration are unusual resistance or hardness when moving the lever to the reverse position, clicking or metallic rattling noises when engaging that gear, and in advanced stages, slipping or complete loss of reverse thrust. It is advisable to visually check the condition of the teeth each time you change the oil in the foot or dismantle the conical group, paying special attention to chipped, chipped teeth or those with abnormal friction marks. Acting at the first signs of wear prevents the failure from spreading to the propeller shaft or dog clutch assembly, repairs that are considerably more expensive than simply replacing the pinion.
