Description

Function and technical context

This zinc anode for Renault marine engines acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the noble metal parts of the engine and submerged transmission. It works in the anti-corrosion protection system of the propulsion assembly, exposing itself in a controlled manner to the aquatic environment—both in salt water and in fresh or brackish water—to preserve the integrity of the block, the shaft and the stern components. Its diameter of 28 to 34 mm makes it specific for the fixing points defined on the outboard motors and propellers of the Renault range, guaranteeing a precise fit without play or clearance that compromises the electrical contact necessary for protection. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, corrosion advances on the aluminum or steel parts of the engine, generating structural damage that requires expensive repair and, in extreme cases, rendering components of the propulsion system unusable.

When to replace this part?

An anode must be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, since below that threshold its cathodic protection capacity decreases significantly. The recommended inspection is at least once per nautical season, and it is common to replace them annually if the boat remains in the water continuously or navigates in areas with high saline conductivity. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most effective practice to avoid silent corrosion that is only discovered—with high-cost repairs—when the engine already shows pitting or material loss in critical areas.
