Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the vessel's tailshaft, acting as an electrochemical sacrifice to preserve higher-value submerged metal parts. This 50mm Radice anode works in the propulsion system, protecting it from galvanic corrosion that occurs when different metals coexist in an electrolytic medium such as salt, brackish or fresh water. Its function is fundamental: by corroding in a controlled and priority manner, it prevents wear from affecting the shaft, propeller, horn or transmission seals, components whose repair or replacement involves a very high cost. Manufactured by Radice, an Italian company specialized in naval propulsion, this anode is sized for 50 mm diameter shafts and is identified with the reference CMPNRAD50C.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost between 30% and 50% of their mass, as below this threshold they no longer offer effective protection against galvanic corrosion. The clearest symptoms that the anode is exhausted are the appearance of pits or oxidation stains on the tail shaft, the propeller with a rough feel or abnormal coloration, and electrolysis marks on the adjacent metal areas. It is recommended to replace it preventively at each annual stranding: renewing the anode is one of the lowest-cost interventions in nautical maintenance and avoids serious breakdowns in the propulsion system that would require repairs at the strand or, in the worst case, assistance at sea.
